DPC: December 2nd
Dec 2nd

This past Saturday NBC premiered this 30 minute festive flick. Merry Madagascar quickly became a favorite in our house. The boys already loved Madagascar and its sequel. They love them so much that M, my 3 year old, does not leave the house with out his Schleich giraffe, lion, hippo and zebra. I am not proud to say that M can recite entire chunks of both the full length movies and is starting to memorize quotes from the latest adventures of Melvin, Gloria, Alex and Marty!
District 9 Earns Its R Rating
Sep 1st
This post was intended to be a review of District 9. However, everytime I think back to the movie, all I can think about is the mother and her son sitting behind us.
District 9 is Rated R. Unlike some Rated R movies, this movie earns its rating through and through. It was violent, it had adult language and themes, it was bloody and flat out horrifying at times.
I have a lot of opinions on this movie (which was T’s pick) but that is not what I want to blog about. It was the mom and her boy that left an even stronger impression on me than the blood splattering the camera lens.
I am a terrible judge of age in other people’s children. I am giving it my bust guess when I say that the boy was about 7, a young 7. He was young enough that his mom had to read the subtitles to him, but old enough to hold a 64 ounce soda and not spill it.
I try my best not to judge other mom’s parenting techniques because I know every kid is different and requires a slightly different style. Plus, I find that I surprise myself sometimes with my lack of parenting skills and general ambivalence. But I think that I can safely say that taking my boys, even around the mature age of 7, to this type of movie, a Rated R movie, would never-ever happen.
If that wasn’t enough to make me choke on my oversized Diet Coke, the boy and his slightly older brother, were not phased at all by the violence, language or gore that was happening on the screen. They were so un-phased that they laughed at people getting shot at, cheered when a human’s head was being ripped off and didn’t spit out their 64 ounces of soda in disgust while close ups of the gore covered the movie theatre screen.
I can not get over it. Even assuming that the ticket sales person didn’t warn the mom or if the Rated R posted on the film’s poster was overlooked, the previews should have given her an insight of the type of entertainment she was about to expose her boys too. The trailers included Jennifer’s Body, multiple violent video game ads, 9, Sons of Anarchy, Extract and a few more forgettable horror movies. Obviously this wasn’t going to be a brightly colored Pixar blockbuster.
She sat through the whole thing. So did her boys. She seemed to enjoy it. Her boys obviously enjoyed it.
Maybe I am old fashioned. Maybe I shelter my boys. Maybe it is good for a child to be horrified – it could toughen them up. Maybe I should expose them to more than brightly colored Pixar movies.
Or maybe just maybe, there is actually the one black and white issue in parenting. I think it is wrong. On so many levels, I think it is wrong. Children who can not read the subtitles in a horror movie should not be watching it. Maybe 17 is a bit old for the cut off, I know at 17 I wouldn’t have wanted my parents tagging along, but 7?!
I need to just publish this post because I can not fully articulate all that I am thinking and feeling…all I can say is seriously, District 9? Wasn’t there a better option for movie? Shorts or something with Miley Cyrus… doesn’t she always have a movie out?
Or save some cash and spend the afternoon at the park… fresh air has to be better for the wallet and the kid’s psyche than aliens and soldiers in an all out gun slinging battle.
Reader Review
Jul 4th
T and I just finished The Reader. I know, give me a break. I am a mom. Most likely if you are reading this, you are a mom too. Moms of toddlers are on top of the latest potty training technique, top of the line strollers and the best place to buy 100% apple juice in mass quantity. We are not however, on top of what movie is grossing the most over the weekends… unless its a Pixar movie!
I went into The Reader not knowing much about it except for what I saw of the Kate Winslet interview on Oprah. I knew Oprah applauded Kate for having natural breasts and a great curvy body. I knew that Kate sleeps with a young boy. And I knew that Kate was a Nazi. Oh yeah, and it was a hit at the Oscars.
I like going into a movie not knowing a lot. I hate when movie trailers give away the best parts of the movie. Case in point, the Bride Wars trailer. I saw the trailer, thought it looked funny and was excited to see the movie. I even moved it to the coveted number one spot on the Netflix cue. Then I watched the movie. I had basically seen everything the movie had to offer. The funniest parts were in the trailer. Thats all there was to the movie. If I hadn’t seen the trailer, I think I would have enjoyed the movie more.
Needless to say, knowing Oprah’s opinions of Kate’s breasts were not giving away the plot line.
I thought Kate deserved every recognition, including the Oscar, that she received. She was fantastic. David Kross (not to be confused with David Cross) was surprising. Never once did I think of him as an actor.
The story was compelling. It made me think. It made me weigh morality against the law. It made me think about how one person can affect another’s life so completely. It also made me grateful for a clean bath, electric heat and modern medicine (being trapped in bed for months because of scarlet fever!?).
It made me want to read. Any story, movie, song… or whatever that makes me want to read gets a thumbs up in my book.
Overall, it was a movie I am glad that I finally got around to watching. It was beautifully made and the “loosing virginity” scene was edited in such a way that had me laughing and well…not laughing! I don’t think I would buy the DVD, not because I didn’t like it enough to spend 20 bucks on it, I just don’t think I will ever watch it again… kind of like The Passion of the Christ which is in our movie collection still in it plastic wrapper. Good movie, just not one you want to watch over and over again.
That said, I would watch The Reader again… probably twice before I watch The Passion of the Christ again.
